What is Smithware's I*net Data Server?
I*net Data Server is a simple way to connect users to Btrieve database information over the I*net. It's made up of two basic components: a server component and a client component.
The IDS Server Component is a robust, multi-threaded, and secure database server which runs as a Windows NT service. The IDS acts as a proxy between a Btrieve server and an IDS client. Look at figure 1 and you'll notice its familiar Client/Server architecture; the server component (I*net Data Server) handles requests from other computers (clients). In this case, the users may be connected by the I*net (intranet, Internet--and yes this includes the web!), or by using any TCP/IP connection anywhere in the world. The information they are connecting to is simply stored in Btrieve files.

The IDS Client Component is available in three flavors: an ActiveX client, a Java client, and a DLL client. The ActiveX client is a great choice for browserless applications, the Java client is the best choice for web/browser based applications because of its neat and tidy applet sizes, and the DLL client can allow you to I*net enable legacy Btrieve applications. This is why we say that IDS allows you to enable new, existing, and even legacy Btrieve applications for use over the I*net.
Look at figure 2 and you can see that you can deploy different types of applications that access the same underlying data using any of the three types of clients. In fact, IDS clients can connect to multiple servers with a single dial-up connection regardless of the server's location.

on servers located anywhere in the world.
Now that we're all on the same page (pun intended), let's get to the fun stuff. In order to demonstrate some of the power and flexibility that our I*net Data Server can give you, let's take look at some real life examples of IDS usefulness. We'll show you two of the three clients in action. In fact, two of the demonstrations you can try share the same database, allowing you to change the data with one client demo and instantly view the changes you made with the other. Sounds like fun!
