The "Multi-Client" Approach to
I*Net Database Development

An On-line Demonstration

One of the advantages of using IDS technology is a "multi-client" approach to Internet database development. To illustrate this, you can use the Java applet below and the ActiveX Client I*net demo application (INetDemo.exe) simultaneously to access the same data files on our server here in Nashville, TN.

This demonstrates the flexibility in using more than one type of client to access the same data files. This "multi-client" approach would be particularly useful for presenting the same data on the Internet that you access everyday with your local Btrieve-based software package. Using the IDS Java Client, developers can make data available for immediate access from any browser over the Internet (ex. order and inventory data files), and at the same time using the ActiveX Client, outside sales people could be sharing the same data files with an application (browserless) from their home office over their existing connection to the Internet. All of this can be accomplished while corporate headquarters is conducting daily business with the same files.

The end result is that all users can share the same data in real-time. There is no need for any complicated synchronization of data from remote sites or any need for web-specific data formats for data being consumed over the Internet.

Imagine being able to securely use the same data files for your daily business activities in your corporate headquarters and allowing users to securely access those same files from anywhere in the world. The data resides in a single format no matter which client is accessing it and no matter where in the world the client might be. Not only that, this "multi-client" approach is an extremely low-cost, low-maintenance solution to providing truly synchronized and efficient access to data. Only IDS provides a unified solution for web (browser-based) and non-web (browserless) Internet database application development.

(Note: If you have problems viewing this applet, then you've either hit a firewall or you are experiencing browser incompatibility. To test this, visit another site that uses Java applets -- www.sun.com would be a good site. If you can download that applet, odds are it's a firewall problem (the IDS can be configured around firewalls, by the way); otherwise, your browser is probably not completely Java enabled yet.)

Instructions

Use the arrow buttons to navigate through the database records.

Use the Clear, Update, Insert, and Delete buttons to make changes to the data file.

To search the database, use the combo box to select an index for your search. Then enter the search into the field you selected. Press the search button to initiate the search.

Suggestion

You can run the ActiveX Customer Browser side by side with this applet. Make changes with one and view the changes with the other demonstrating the multi-client approach.
